Populism seems to be on the increase on the international political landscape. It is fostered by the development of the relationship between politics and the mass media. Public opinion is now measured via social networks, which are often influenced by particular power (lobby?) groups. We must continue working to strengthen democracy through the development of civil society, which is independent of politics, and thus capable of keeping populist tendencies in check. It is a challenge that Christian ethics is engaged with in today’s world and that is offered as an antidote to those political leaders who are rabble-rousers of sovereign people.
